150th anniversary Civic Dinner

Dr Alistair Dorward – Glasgow Care Foundation’s Chairman welcomed our guests to a Civic Dinner on 17th May 2024. Glasgow City Council kindly hosted this event to celebrate our 150th Anniversary. In 1874 a group of businessmen formed “The Association for Organising Charitable Relief and Repressing Mendicity” – if you look up mendicity – it means begging. We were formed before the Welfare State and the National Health Service. Sadly, there is still a need for our help today. While our roots are steeped in the Victorian era, the work we do is up to date. Families in dire need in Glasgow – they must have lived here for at least five years – we supply items such as a cooker or washing machine so that their children are not going to school hungry and can have clean clothes. Other items like flooring allow a baby to crawl safely, and beds aid a more restful sleep. We also provide community grants for local projects and support school trips and holidays.  Last year we supported over 30 local small organisations and charities who would benefit from a grant.

The Foundation has a small, dedicated staff and a board consisting of volunteer Trustees.

Our aim is to help 10,000 people in the next 10 years – we are on our way to achieve this but if you can help, please get in touch.
